All The Flavors of Classic Mexican Churros
In Mexico, churros are usually sold by street vendors and in Mexican bakeries.
The most common topping on churros is just white sugar. Some vendors might add some ground cinnamon on top too, but it’s more likely that you’ll find churros with just white sugar on them.
Some churros are filled with vanilla cream. Others are just fried pastry twists without any filling. My cupcakes have a cinnamon sugar topping and a homemade cinnamon buttercream frosting. You are going to love it!

Homemade Cinnamon Sugar Frosting
Pin this recipe so you can find this frosting recipe later. It tastes perfect on my churro cupcakes, but it will also taste amazing on some caramel apple cupcakes too.
Here’s what I used in my cinnamon frosting:
- Sweet Cream Butter – use unsalted butter and make sure it’s sweet cream.
- Powdered sugar – Powdered sugar is a staple in homemade buttercream frosting.
- Cinnamon
- Heavy Whipping Cream – You can use half and half too, but it won’t turn out as thick or have the same flavor.
- Vanilla
- Salted Caramel Sauce – There is a way to make your own, but I prefer to buy a jar of it to save myself time.
How To Tell When The Cupcakes Are Done
These take about 22 minutes to bake completely. I like to use the toothpick test to check. Stick a toothpick in the middle of the cupcake. If it comes out clean, it’s done!
Tip: Always use your nose, too. Whenever I bake, if I start to smell the cookies or cupcakes, I know it’s about time to check on them.

Easy Churro Cupcakes Recipe
Ingredients
Sugar
Unsalted butter, softened
Eggs
Baking powder
Baking soda
Flour
Ground cinnamon
Salt
Heavy cream
Sour cream
Toppings For Cupcakes
Melted butter
Sugar
Ground cinnamon
Fresh or frozen churros
Cinnamon Frosting ingredients
Unsalted sweet cream butter
Powder sugar
Ground cinnamon
Heavy whipping cream
Vanilla
Salted caramel sauce
Piping bag fitted with star tip
Cupcake directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line cupcake pan with liners
In a standing mixer beat sugar and butter until creamed
Add egg and mix until fully incorporated
Beat in vanilla extract, salt, baking soda, baking powder, and cinnamon.
Combine the heavy cream into the wet mixture.
Add in flour, a little at a time.
Add in the sour cream.
Spoon batter about 3/4 full.
Bake in the oven for about 22 minutes or until the center of the cupcake comes out clean with a toothpick.
Frosting directions
Combine all ingredients into a standing mixer and mix on low speed
until combined and stiff peaks form
Scoop the frosting into the piping bag
Melt 1 C of butter into a microwave safe bowl
Mix in 2 C of sugar and the 2 tbsp ground cinnamon into another bowl
Dip the top of the cupcakes into the melted butter and then dip it
into the cinnamon sugar mix
Frost the cupcakes with the cinnamon frosting
Drizzle caramel sauce and top with a churro
