What Is Tamale Pie
Are you a fan of southwestern cuisine? If so, you’ll really dig this tamale pie! A Tamale pie is a baked casserole that is usually topped with cornbread. The rest of the dish uses the same ingredients used to make tamales.
In order to make it low-carb, I made the topping with almond flour, butter, and a bunch of other tasty ingredients! I’ll explain more about them throughout this post.
Trust me, if you like Mexican food, then you are going to love this high-protein casserole.

The main ingredients in the bottom half of the pie are seasoned ground beef, garlic, and onion. Use any type of onion. My favorite type to use in skillet recipes like this is white or yellow. I just think the red onions are way too powerful.
I spiced the ground beef with some taco seasoning. If you use a jar of taco seasoning, make sure it doesn’t have corn starch or flour in it. You want just the spices.
You can also just make your own taco seasoning. Use any combination of the following spices to make a homemade jar of taco seasoning:
- Chili Powder
- Garlic Powder
- Paprika
- Dried Oregano
- Onion Powder
- Salt
- Pepper
- Red Pepper Flakes
Beef Tamale Pie
This beef tamale pie can work for your weekly meal prep as long as you eat it quickly. The almond flour topping will begin to soak up the juices from the ground beef mixture, so it only stays the best quality for about 3 days.
It only takes about 45 minutes to make this recipe, so I suggest cooking and eating it fresh instead of trying to store leftovers.
Keto Tamale Pie
This keto tamale pie is a hearty meal that your family is going to love! The ground beef is topped with a hearty almond flour breading that tastes a lot like cornbread.
You don’t need very many sides to fill it up. If you want to add some low-carb Mexican side dishes, serve this with some Mexican Rice and guacamole. Now you have a perfect dinner everyone will enjoy!
Low Carb Tamale Pie Recipe
You can either serve it plain, right out of the oven, or add a few toppings to the tamale pie. Honestly, I think the almond flour breading on top is already spiced really well with green chilis, so it doesn’t need a lot of garnishes or toppings.
If you want, you can add a few chopped tomatoes on top. Just remember that tomatoes have natural sugars and carbs in them. A lower-carb choice might be a dollop of sour cream. Chopped parsley or cilantro is also a fantastic choice.
