Creamy, zesty, and cheesy, a bowl of this keto French onion soup is the height of luxury. Made with low-carb croutons and shredded gruyere cheese.
Low-Carb French Onion Soup
French onion soup is one of the most easily-recognizable soups out there. The rich beef broth, bold slices of onion, all topped with melted Shredded gruyere cheese and crispy bread.
Classic French onion soup recipes vary but are usually low-carb until they add the baguettes on top. It’s basically a rich soup made with beef broth and cheese – and sometimes includes wine.
I stayed true to the original recipe but changed the baguettes. It has the same authentic cheesy and savory flavors that you love.
Keto French Onion Soup
This recipe will only work in your meal prep if you store it without the cheese. Once you add the cheese, it won’t store as nicely. Just keep it in an airtight and leakproof container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
When you are ready to enjoy it again, add the cheese and bread on top and it will taste as good as fresh soup.
Keto Croutons
The secret to this amazing keto French onion soup is the tasty bread on top! If you have a favorite low-carb bread, go ahead and use it. My favorite recipe for low-carb bread literally takes 90 seconds to make.
This 90-second keto bread tastes amazing toasted, so pop it in the toaster before adding it to your soup. If you broil the bread or heat it up in a toaster oven, it can even become nice and crispy, resembling croutons.
This bread recipe is slightly sweet, made with almond flour, butter, heavy cream, and a few other ingredients.
What To Eat With French Onion Soup
French onion soup is a flavorful soup that really goes well with almost anything. The bold flavors in pesto are a natural companion, so enjoy this soup with a low-carb pesto chicken salad.
It’s also a flavorful soup that is perfect with salmon. This keto pesto salmon bowl is also delicious with some French onion soup.
Best Cheese For French Onion Soup
There is a lot of room for creativity and personal preference when it comes to French onion soup. If you want a nutty and earthy cheese, go with gruyere. If you prefer something milder that melts into the soup, go with provolone or mozzarella.
It’s best to stick with white cheese, since that is what you usually see on French onion soup. Fontina and Monterey Jack are also varieties of mild white cheese that will melt really well.
