Three Ways To Prevent Back To School Head Lice

Growing my hair out was everything to me! It was down below my waist at one point and everyone always told me que pelo Lindo I had. Every night I’d brush it before I went to bed and I played around with different hair styles (my favorite was a high ponytail). I remember the day I found out I had lice. My head wasn’t itchy, but a close friend had them too and my mom decided to check my hair. I thought it was no big deal, my mom used a homemade concoction to get rid of the lice, searched my head and gave me the green light that I was rid of them. I was relieved, to say the least.

It wasn’t even a week later where my head started actually getting itchy. We repeated the process, but this time it just wouldn’t go away.  My hair had to be cut and I was devastated! In NYC public schools, a lice infestation was pretty common, but I never really worried about it because I thought I was careful.

Now that Joseph is heading into preschool and has a head full of the softest curls ever, I’m making sure I’m stocked up with all the necessities I need to avoid a lice infestation. Below are three ways to prevent a back to school head lice infestation.

  1. Teach your kids while they’re young not to share a hairbrush, hats, and hair ties. **If they have long hair it’s preferable to keep hair up.
  1. Stock up on the #1 Pediatrician recommended brand Nix Ultra® Super Lice Treatment from Walmart (and some extra combs that are always handy to have for detangling). It’s fast, effective, super tough on lice, and gentle on the skin, which is important to me because all my kids have sensitive skin. In case you didn’t know, lice can be very resistant, and Nix Ultra® gets the job done by killing the lice and the eggs – even the resistant “super” lice! **Nix® is pesticide free and non-toxic. 3. Last, but most definitely not least, don’t assume your kids won’t get lice, because lice don’t discriminate qualquiera can get it! Instead, be proactive and look for signs. An itchy scalp is the most obvious, but also look out for a rash around their hairline. The white specks that look almost like a tiny piece of dandruff is a good tell.
