Pumpkin Pasta Sauce
Celebrate pumpkin season with a savory pasta sauce! This is the perfect fall pasta sauce and the best way to sweeten a sauce without adding any kind of sugar substitutes.
The pumpkin is the sweetener. That means the sauce won’t have any funky aftertaste.
Does it taste like a pumpkin pie? No, it doesn’t taste like pumpkin pie because I didn’t add the pumpkin pie spices – cloves, cinnamon, or allspice.
Instead, I flavored the sauce with Italian seasonings. And if you want to give it a little spice, add some red pepper flakes.
Keto Pumpkin Sauce
Be careful when you buy pumpkin puree at the store. It’s stored right next to the pumpkin pie filling, and they are not the same thing!
Pumpkin pie filling has pumpkin pie spices as well as added sugar in it.
I used pumpkin puree it’s pure pumpkin and nothing else. You can even make your own pumpkin puree.
Cut a pumpkin in half, scoop out the seeds. Then, slice the pumpkin up and roast it.
When it’s nice and soft, scoop out the filling and smash it with a spoon. That’s it!
Pumpkin Sauce With Sausage
The sausage is completely optional, but I suggest adding it to the sauce. When you do, you’re making the sauce part of a complete meal and the type of sausage you use will effect the flavor of the pasta, too.
If you enjoy lots of spice, then use spicy Italian sausage and if you want something milder, then use mild sausage.
Do not use maple or breakfast sausage because it will be sweetened and could kick you out of ketosis.
How To Use Pasta Sauce
The most obvious way to use pasta sauce is on top of pasta, of course! I’m a huge fan of palmini linguini noodles but you can also use Miracle Noodles or zucchini noodles.
Be careful with how much spaghetti squash you eat at one time. Even though spaghetti squash is a whole food, it’s higher in natural sugar and all those extra carbs could kick you out of ketosis.
Then, serve this with your favorite low-carb sides. Kids will love keto garlic knots!
Keep things simple and just add your favorite steamed vegetables. Keto loaded ranch cauliflower is a really filling side dish that has a lot of similar flavors to this pasta sauce.
This Greek cauliflower rice would taste amazing with it too!
How To Store Pasta Sauce
The best way to store pasta sauce is in an airtight and spillproof container. A mason jar with a screw top lid is my favorite kind of container for homemade sauces.
Then, keep it in the refrigerator for up to a week. It’s best to use the sauce within three days.
Yes, you can freeze homemade pasta sauce. However, I don’t recommend it.
This is because when it thaws, the texture of the sauce will be a bit thinner. But if you don’t mind the texture change, freeze the sauce for up to six months.
