~ Florida Lawn Care Tips From TruGreen ~

My first house was in New Jersey and it had a decent sized yard that got filled up with tons and tons of leaves during the fall. Back then, I thought the raking was overwhelming and took a lot of work. None of that compares to my current living situation in Tampa Bay, Florida, where lawn care requires year-round maintenance, and if you think that because it’s always sunny that our lawns are beautiful and a cinch to care for, you’re wrong.
Maintaining a lawn in Florida, no matter what the size of it is, is a lot of work. It varies from having to be mowed two to three times a week, which is unbearable in the heat. Right now, we are dealing with a variety of patches that are starting brown grass, and even though I’m tempted to let it be the truth is, that it doesn’t look pretty and I would much rather have Joseph running around on a pretty lawn with grass.
Below are five ways to care for your Florida lawn from Trugreen.
- Watering is essential – Even during the cooler fall weather your lawn needs one inch of water per week. When you combine dry spells and our sandy soil you get an extremely dry and thirsty lawn. Watering regularly is a must! **Be sure to check your city and county, watering regulations is typically limited to once per week.
- Protect against weed takeover – Weeds are a 365 days a year thing down here in Florida. Dollar weed and oxalis are common in lawns and regular maintenance is required.
- Keep your mower handy – During the fall, grass growth slows down significantly, but that doesn’t mean that it stops growing all together, and it will still require a good mowing every two to three weeks, even during the January and February.
- Help the lawn recuperate – Fall and winter are considered recuperation months, even in Florida. It’s the perfect time and weather to care for and improve the overall heath of your lawn. You can perform aeration and over seed to help it along the dry months and ensure it stays healthy, strong, and pretty because it is, after all, the first thing you see when you pull up to your house. I don’t know about you but I think it should be just as pretty as the inside of your house.
One huge plus during Florida’s somewhat cooler months is that bugs and pest are less common because the grass simply isn’t putting out enough of this new growth and pests have a smaller food supply. These are really helpful tips. Our lawn could probably use some work. We have some weeds moving from the ditch up to the front yard.
I’m not sure if the grass in SC is much different. Despite the ridiculous amount of rain we get here, it still seems like I have to water it like crazy.

Great Tips! This was our first summer not using TruGreen – our lawn held up for the most part, but it is always better with TruGreen!
Great tips! I’m chuckling over the one that talks about continuing to mow in January and February – here in WI my poor lawn will be covered with 10 feet of snow by then! 🙂
