Fried cabbage is naturally keto-friendly. Classic recipes basically call for butter, cabbage, and spices. In order to keep this as true to the regular recipe as possible, I used butter and garlic too.
To save time, I sprinkled some Italian seasoning on top of the cabbage instead of measuring out each spice individually.
There is a lot of room for culinary creativity. If you want it to be a little spicier, add some cayenne pepper and red pepper flakes. You can also add some chopped onion and a dash of paprika for some smoky flavors.
Fried Cabbage With Sausage
Some cabbage and sausage recipes use kielbasa or a smoked sausage. I used ground sausage because I love how the sausage mixes with the shredded cabbage. You can replace it with sliced smoked sausage if you want.
The most important thing to remember is to only use sausage that is sugar-free. Do not use sausage that includes sugar in the ingredients.
Butter Fried Cabbage Keto
You can even omit the sausage entirely and just make butter fried cabbage! This cabbage skillet recipe can either be a high-fiber and tasty side dish or the main course – it all depends on whether you add the sausage or not.
Save the butter fried cabbage in the refrigerator inside an airtight container. It is perfect for your weekly meal prep. It will stay fresh for up to three days.
What To Serve With Fried Cabbage
I consider this to be an Irish-inspired recipe, so serve it with other classic Irish recipes. If you leave the sausage out of the cabbage skillet, then serve the cabbage with some keto corned beef hash with radishes.
It also goes really well with a low-carb Reuben sandwich.
Start out your meal with a Reuben soup and you have a filling meal.
Best Way To Fry Cabbage
The best way to fry cabbage is to keep a little bit of the sausage grease in the skillet after you brown it. This will infuse more flavor into the cabbage. It’s also important to cover the skillet with a lid while the cabbage cooks.
When you cover it, the flavors will soften the cabbage more effectively.
You don’t have to use a cast-iron skillet, but I love mine! Cooking in a cast iron skillet just adds more flavor to all my recipes.

Ingredients:
Ground sausage
Chopped cabbage
Olive oil
Butter unsalted
Italian seasoning
Minced garlic
Salt and pepper
Green onions for garnish
Instructions:
Brown the sausage in a large skillet over medium high heat until cooked completely through. Remove the sausage and set aside.
Drain the grease from the skillet.
Place the skillet back on the stove over medium heat, and add the oil and butter.
Stir in the minced garlic, and saute for 30 seconds.
Add in the cabbage, and stir to combine.
Sprinkle in the Italian seasoning and salt and pepper to taste.
Cover, and saute until the cabbage is done to your liking.
Stir the sausage back in, and saute another minute or two before serving.
Garnish with chopped green onions.
