I grew up in Brooklyn and it wasn’t in the nicest area. A lot of kids either flunked out of school or spent a lot of their school time cutting class and getting into fights. I LOVED my city but it definitely wasn’t an ideal environment, so my parents kept a very tight hold on me and kept my brother and I away from all the negativity. We spent most of our time with familia and they made it very clear that it was not our environment that dictated how we would turn out to be. We were taught our strong roots in our family and how focused we were on our education and goals would decide how we turned out.
Now as a mom of cinco boys, I try my best to raise them with the same beliefs and environment I did. My boys were raised in a much better school system than I was, but I didn’t want that to be a reason to derail me from keeping them on a straight and narrow path and making sure they knew how important their education is. With programs like Labels for Education , it’s easy and fun to get kids, the community and friends involved in your local schools. By collecting UPC’s and beverage caps from a ton of participating products, your school (if registered) will earn points that can be used towards arts, athletics and academic merchandise. The awesomeness of Labels For Eductaion is that all the products are the very items you probably already use and love! There’s the classic Spaghettio’s, Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup and Goldfish, all of which me, y mi mama have counted on for busy school days and nights where there’s not enough time to whip up a plate of arroz y habichuela. It’s a win-win, you purchase participating products you already love and use, then clip and help your school earn points.

Right now it’s Robert’s school that is participating and it’s sort of become our thing to head out to Walmart food shopping and pick our favorite Labels For Education participating products. This year I’ve taken it a step further and Robert put together a handy binder that includes a shopping list and pockets to hold all our labels.

To make collecting the labels a little more interactive I gave Robert control of this DIY and he decided to take the packaging from his favorite products to decorate the binder. Below is a super easy step by step tutorial to recreate the binder and a printable shopping list just for you!

Materials:
Pocket page protectors
Binder
Plastic pockets
Decorative tape
Scissors
Packaging

Instructions:
Cut out labels for Education Labels and place aside.

Use remaining packaging and cut out your desired shapes or labels.

Tape onto to binder leaving enough room to fill up the next time you have more packaging.

Place Label for Education labels inside protectors and then place into binder.

Now, even on the busiest nights, where a can of Spaghettio’s saves the night, their is still something fun for us to do together, like clip and save our lables and help the school in return.

What a fantastic program!!
To my knowledge we don’t have anything like that here in Canada. We need to get on board with this!!
I love Goldfish! I think it’s wonderful that you are teaching your kids to pass it on like that. So many parents don’t do that. They are adorable!
Those are all favorites in our home too! I make sure my boys always know to save all the points too!
That is such a great way to store them! It’s also a super visual reminder that you’re collecting them when you see the fun colorful folder.
What an awesome DIY! I love Labels for Education!
Your parents are very wise. I totally agree that is is not our environment that defines us. I love that you’ve kept the healthy family traditions and values and passed these on to your cincos 🙂

Is it weird that I’m looking forward to these? My babe is still young but I can’t wait to do a binder like this!
This is a great idea! Our kids’ school collects labels too, for education. I did too as a kid!
That’s actually a really great idea. I just kind of tear mine off of the boxes and then throw them into a Ziploc bag and hang it on my fridge until it’s time to turn them in.
That’s exactly where mine are too. While the kids are in school they have forms sent home with cute pictures and spaces to attach the labels. Once it’s complete, they turn them back in.
