What Is A Smash Burger
There is a popular burger chain called SmashBurger that made this style of hamburger popular. But what is a smash burger?
A smash burger is thin, loosely packed hamburger that is slammed onto the griddle or grill with a spatula. By pressing the spatula down into the meat, the burger patty gets a perfect sear on the outside.
You’ll notice that I have “smashing” with the spatula in the directions. Don’t skip this part because it’s what makes it a smash burger!
Keto Smash Burger
There are two things that make a Big Mac different from other types of burgers. First, there is a middle layer of bread. Second, that iconic Big Mac sauce.
I was able to recreate both things and still keep the net carbs under 3 grams.
I did this by using zero-carb tortillas. They are the perfect keto-friendly substitute for bread. You won’t even miss the buns, it really does taste the same.
Keto Big Mac
My keto big mac salad was such a huge hit that I knew I wanted to make the burger itself.
What is in Big Mac sauce? We may never actually know. But I think I got pretty close! There is some kind of combination of mayo, mustard, ketchup, and pickles.
From there, I also added my favorite spices until it tasted almost identical. When you’re at the grocery store, remember to buy sugar-free ketchup. So many regular bottles use corn syrup as a sweetener.
Big Mac Smash Burger
I suggest eating your Big Mac smash burgers fresh when they are hot off the grill. You can store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two days. After about a day the tortillas will start to soften, but they are still safe to eat.
But go ahead and double the Big Mac sauce recipe and keep extra in the fridge. You can use that on salad, as a dip for hardboiled eggs, or as a sauce for roll ups!
What To Eat With Burgers
These keto smash burgers are tasty by themselves, but you can also serve them for dinner or at parties. If you want a hamburger bun instead, I suggest making some keto dinner rolls and cutting them in half.
You can also wrap the keto burgers in large pieces of lettuce or serve these burgers on some homemade keto Hawaiian rolls.
On the side, you just can’t go wrong with some keto greek cucumber salad, Keto guacamole deviled eggs, or some Keto fried pickles with cheese. Then, serve it all with a cold glass of sugar-free sweet tea!
Talk about refreshing!
