Cook a recipe that dates back centuries. Keto chicken paprikash is an authentic Hungarian recipe that will make your mouth water.
What Is Chicken Paprikash
It’s also called chicken paprika. This dish originated in Hungary. In fact, it is one of the most popular recipes to come over to America from Hungary. It features chicken that is smothered in a bold and creamy sauce.
As you might guess, one of the main ingredients in this recipe is Hungarian paprika.
I stayed pretty close to the original recipe. this dish is just as flavorful and bold. In fact, you’ll be able to smell it as it simmers on the stove. As you smell all the aromas drifting up, you’ll pray for it to cook faster so you can eat it.
What Is Hungarian Paprika
Trust me, if you are going to make authentic Hungarian chicken paprikash, use Hungarian paprika. There are a bunch of different varieties of Hungarian paprika out there.
If you want a sweeter paprika, buy különleges. For a really spicy chicken dish, then I suggest buying erős.
If you find Hungarian sweet paprika in the store, it is probably the édesnemes variety. This has a sweet and pungeant flavor and a bright red color. It’s perfect for this dish – not too spicy for kids, but full enough of flavor to still stand out.
Keto Chicken Paprikash
Traditional chicken paprikash has a sauce that is thickened with all-purpose flour. That’s the only thing I had to change to make it low-carb. I tried to keep it as true to the classic recipe as I could.
Turns out, you don’t even miss it! If you want it to make the sauce even thicker, add a pinch of xanthan gum to the sauce. I found that this sauce is thick enough after combining sour cream and heavy whipping cream.
What To Eat With Chicken Paprikash
Traditionally, people serve mashed potatoes with chicken paprikash. Instead of mashed potatoes, serve some cauliflower mash with it to keep the carb count low.
Roasted veggies are another classic side dish to serve along with it, so add some asparagus almondine or your favorite green bean recipe with it.
The creamy sauce just begs for some rolls, so make some keto rosemary dinner rolls to go along with the chicken paprikash.
How To Use Leftover Chicken
Save this recipe and use it in your weekly meal prep. Reuse the flavorful chicken in other recipes. I like to shred it or chop it up and sprinkle it on top of a chopped salad. You can also use leftover chicken in a chicken soup later on in the week.
