I know that I can’t possibly be the only woman with a bag that weighs a ton! Sometimes my bag is so heavy my shoulders start to ache. Crazy, I know! I’m not one to carry around a lot of stuff but I think the fact that I only use larger bags contributes to the problem. Whenever I’m in a hurry and the kids or my husband says “ can you hold this”, I throw it in my bag. If I’m running out the door and forget to put something in the baby bag thats already in the car, I throw it in my bag. Over the years my bag has become a big black abyss filled with things that aren’t necessarliy always mine.

Last weekend I switched out my large draw string bag and used a small saddle bag as a test to see if I could keep my bag light and neat. For an entire weekend every time someone askefd if I could hold something, I didn’t have room in my bag. My saddle bag was indeed lighter than my satchel would have been but I did notice that it was extremely sloppy and disorganized. Below I put together what I did to regain control of my bag.

1. I’ve now made a habit of taking a few minutes every Sunday and cleaning out my purse. I tend to hang on to all of my receipts but a week is plenty of time to decide whether or not something needs to be returned and if not, it gets chucked out.
2. I’m always grabbing at the bottom of my bag searching for my small wallet or unfolding crumbled receipts when I have to return something. To solve that problem I got rid of my tiny wallet and got myself a large wallet with two sides (see above). One side for all of my cards and the other side to keep the receipts I need.
3. I took all of my “just in case” stuff, placed them in a tote and put it in the trunk of my car. The umbrella, extra tights, a bottle of Moltrin and even a clutch will conveniently be in my car if I need it.
4. I emptied out a pocket in the baby bag and it now serves as a pocket for all of my family. It’s perfect because the baby bag hangs off the stroller and I clean it out constantly.
5. I’ve always carried around a big bag but now if I know I’m going to have a super busy day I swap it out for a smaller bag to keep my hands free and the load even lighter.
