Anyone that is just starting on the keto diet probably knows that cheese is always keto-friendly. So are mozzarella sticks ok to eat on a low-carb diet?
The kind of mozzarella sticks you might order from a restaurant is not keto. It is breaded with breadcrumbs and deep-fried in unhealthy oils.
That doesn’t mean you have to always avoid mozzarella sticks – it just means you should probably make them at home with low-carb ingredients.
The easiest way to make ket0-friendly mozzarella sticks is to avoid the breading altogether! Sure, you can probably use pork rinds or almond flour, but wrapping them up in bacon is so much quicker, easier, and tastier too!
Bacon Wrapped Mozzarella Sticks
Since there are literally just two ingredients, this is one of the easiest Christmas appetizers I have ever made! Since almost everyone loves both bacon and cheese, these are also one of the most popular appetizers I make.
This isn’t just super delicious, but it’s fantastic for anyone that is starting out on the keto diet. The beginning of the diet is one of the hardest because you are keenly aware of everything you are giving up. These mozzarella sticks taste like you are cheating and take no effort, so you’ll really enjoy them.
Baked Bacon Wrapped Mozzarella Sticks
These are a tasty snack you can enjoy between meals. Since the cheese and bacon is high in fat, it will keep you feeling full until your next meal.
Have fun using your favorite type of cheese. Mozzarella is the most popular cheese to use because it melts so beautifully. Try this recipe with pepper jack cheese – it will have more bite! Or place two kinds of cheese together and wrap the bacon around it – that will give you a mouth full of complex flavors.
One note: I called these baked bacon-wrapped mozzarella sticks, but you really don’t bake them. It’s best to pre-cook the bacon and then broil the bacon-wrapped cheese to crisp them up.
Keto Mozzarella Sticks
These are the perfect things to set out as a holiday appetizer. Who doesn’t love bacon and cheese? You get to enjoy appetizers on the keto diet and not feel like you are eating differently from everyone else.
These mozzarella sticks also taste delicious with a salad for a light lunch or dinner. I like to munch on a few when I eat my keto cobb salad for lunch. It’s very filling.
If you love dipping mozzarella sticks in some sort of dip, I suggest using keto ranch dressing. My favorite brand is from Primal Kitchen, but any sugar-free version will do.
Keto Mozzarella Sticks Air Fryer
You can also make these keto mozzarella sticks in the air fryer. The broiler is easier, but the air fryer works too. Precook the bacon in the microwave and then wrap them around the mozzarella sticks. Then, place them in a single layer in the air fryer basket.
Cook at 300F for about 5 minutes. Check on them and remove them when the bacon is crispy.
Keto Bacon Wrapped Mozzarella Sticks Recipe
You’ll only need two ingredients to make these keto bacon wrapped mozzarella sticks. Exact measurements and instructions can be found in the printable recipe card, just a little bit further below.
INGREDIENTS:
6 mozzarella sticks
Approximately 1 lb bacon (12 slices)
Preferred keto ranch dressing for dipping (I used Primal Kitchen)
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Slice the mozzarella sticks in half. Place in your freezer for 3 hours (or overnight). *This will keep the cheese from melting too quickly before the bacon has cooked.
2. Precook the bacon in your microwave: Separate the bacon slices, place on a plate and cover with a paper towel. Cook for 2-3 minutes, depending how thick your bacon is.
3. Wrap bacon around frozen cheese sticks. Place them on a wire rack over a baking sheet.
4. Broil in your oven for approximately 6-7 minutes, or until bacon is cooked.
5. Remove and let cool, slightly. Serve with your favorite keto ranch dressing.
