It can be tough to find a meal that you can make for your family and fits in with your keto diet. This recipe is super kid-friendly and will keep you within your macros.
What Is Salisbury Steak?
Salisbury steak is basically a fun and seasoned hamburger smothered in gravy. It’s named after James Henry Salisbury (1823-1905) who was a doctor that became famous for his teachings about diet and nutrition.
There are a lot of different ways to make it. Some people use just ground beef, and others make it from round steak.
My version is made with ground beef and other keto-friendly ingredients.
Best Low-Carb Salisbury Steak Recipe
This is a family-friendly meal that is so easy to make, it will become a regular on your meal planning. It tastes so delicious that your kids and family members won’t even be able to tell that it is low-carb.
When you eat the same food as your family, you won’t be as tempted to go off your macros.
Keto Salisbury Steak With Gravy
How do you make thick gravy without flour? For this mushroom gravy, I used beef broth and heavy whipping cream. When you make that in the skillet with the butter and mushrooms, it thickens up really well!
If you want it even thicker, add a sprinkle of xanthan gum. Honestly, I don’t think it needs the xanthan gum. The heavy cream makes it the perfect consistency.
Salisbury Steak With Mushrooms
One thing almost every single recipe agrees on is the addition of mushrooms to the gravy. Mushrooms are a very nutritious food. They are packed with fiber, vitamin D, and powerful antioxidants.
This recipe is also very budget-friendly. It uses very common ingredients that you might already have in your pantry or refrigerator. My favorite way to save time in the kitchen is to make them with pre-made hamburger patties. Talk about easy!
Beef Salisbury Dinner
- You could serve this with some mashed potatoes for your kids or family members who are not on the keto diet. Or, make some cauliflower mashed potatoes as the side dish.
- Another way to serve cauliflower with it is to make some garlic butter cauliflower rice.
- Other side dishes that will taste amazing with it also have lots of garlic (just like the Salisbury steak). Try it with some keto garlic knots or cheese keto garlic toast.
Cajun Salisbury Steak
To make my Salisbury steak a little different, I added some Cajun seasoning! Let me tell you, this made them so much better. My kids gobbled them up!
I like to make extras and store them in the refrigerator for my meal prep for the week. Store the Salisbury steaks in an airtight container without the gravy.
Keep the gravy in a separate container. Refrigerate both the gravy and the patties for up to a week.
