Unfortunately, apples have too much natural sugar to be good on a keto diet. No, apples are not keto-friendly. One medium apple has 22 grams of net carbs.

So, if you’re craving apple pie while you’re on the keto diet, you’ll have to replace the apples with another low-carb fruit or vegetable. There is just no way to make apple pie with apples if you want to stay within your macros. 

Keto Apple Substitute

What is the best fruit or vegetable to use as a substitute for apples in keto apple pie? There are a lot of different recipes for keto apple pie out there.

Some of the most popular apple substitutes are: 

  • Yellow Squash 
  • Chayote Squash
  • Zucchini squash

Out of those three options, chayote squash will have the closest texture to apples. It will stay firm, even after you bake it. Yellow squash and zucchini are more tender. 

I chose to use zucchini because it’s easier to find and a lot more affordable. I have a tip that will help you make the tastiest faux apple pie with zucchini.

Before you chop the zucchini, peel the skin and remove the seeds. The seeds in the zucchini pie might distract from the incredible flavors.

It’s easy to camouflage zucchini as apples when you smother them in the correct spices. Use real butter – preferably salted. Salted butter will enhance all the other spices. Then, use plenty of Swerve brown sugar substitute. This is the best keto sweetener for apple pie because it gives the filling a caramelized flavor.

What To Eat With Apple Pie

What is your favorite thing to eat with apple pie? Since there are just four grams net carbs in each slice of keto apple pie, you can add your favorite low-carb desserts to your plate. 

Top your apple pie with some Keto ice cream or whipped cream. This is a classic combination! There are even brands that sell keto-friendly ice cream if you don’t want to make it.

And if you’re serving this pie at Thanksgiving or Christmas, you will always win with some keto candy cane cheesecake. Everyone loves this sweet and minty pie! 

How To Store Apple Pie 

You’ll store this keto apple pie just like you would a traditional apple pie. Place it in an airtight container and keep it in the refrigerator for up to three days.

After three days, the crust will start to soften, so I suggest eating it soon. 

You can also freeze keto apple pie. Bake it in a freezer-safe pie plate. Let it cool completely and then wrap it tightly in aluminum foil. Keep it in the freeze for up to six months.

The Crust 

  • Almond Flour 
  • Cream Cheese
  • Xanthan Gum 
  • Baking Powder
  • Egg
  • Swerve Confectioner’s Sugar Substitute 

Filling 

  • Zucchini
  • Butter
  • Swerve Brown Sugar Substitute 
  • Vanilla 
  • Apple Pie Spice 
  • Water 

Topping 

  • Almond Flour 
  • Butter
  • Apple Pie Spice 
  • Swerve Confectioner’s Sugar Substitute 

Directions 

Making the keto pie crust

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Add the ingredients for the crust to a mixing bowl, and blend until crumbly.

Press the crust mixture into the bottom and up the sides of a well greased pie plate. Bake for 10 minutes.

While the crust is baking, melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add in the zucchini, brown Swerve, vanilla, apple pie spice and water. Cook until the zucchini softens, and the mixture thickens.

Pour the filling into the pre-baked pie crust.

In a bowl, blend together the ingredients for the crumb topping. Sprinkle the crumb topping over the pie.

  • 1/4 cup Water

  • 1 cup Almond Flour
  • 3 tbsp Butter melted
  • 1 tsp Apple Pie Spice
  • 2 tbsp Swerve Confectioner's Sugar Substitute

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
