This is a classic soup recipe that is the perfect way to use leftover ham bones! Keto Ham Soup is creamy and so comforting.
Is Ham Keto
This is a tricky question, because it depends on how the ham was made. Pure, unglazed ham is keto-friendly. There are only about 1-2 grams of carbs in each serving of ham.
You can even have glazed ham on keto, as long as the glaze was made with keto-friendly ingredients. I have a keto glazed ham recipe I just love!
Just be careful with the ingredients in the ham. Some deli ham is even made with maple syrup or honey.
Creamy Ham Bone Soup
This is a fantastic way to use leftover ham bones from your holiday meal. Don’t throw them away!
Cooking ham bones slowly over low heat will infuse the soup with even more flavor and nutrients.
There are two ways to make this soup – on the stove or in a slow cooker. My recipe will show you how to make this soup on the stove.
If you want to make it in the slow cooker, don’t add the heavy whipping cream until the last 30 minutes of cooking. Heavy cream the cooks all day in the slow cooker tends to have a strange texture at the end.
Keto Ham Soup
This recipe uses heavy whipping cream to give it the iconic creaminess that people love. If you need to make a dairy-free version, then use canned coconut cream instead of whipping cream. The flavor isn’t so strong that you’ll notice a difference.
Another thing that helps this soup stand out is the use of fresh herbs instead of dried. As the fresh herbs cook in the soup, they will slowly infuse the broth with their aromatics and flavor. It is incredible!
Another reason I love to use fresh herbs is that both rosemary and thyme are kinda crunchy when they are dried. When using fresh rosemary and thyme, you can pick out the sprigs and the flavors stay behind.
How To Store Soup
Since this is a cream-based soup, be prepared for it to solidify a little bit in the refrigerator. Store the cooked soup in an airtight and spill proof container.
Keep it in the fridge for no more than three days.
What is the best way to store ham bones? I prefer to freeze them until I’m ready to use them in soup. Store your ham bones in a freezer-safe bag. They will be good in the freezer for up to six months.
What To Eat With Soup
This is a filling and comforting soup. I suggest serving it with your favorite salad. My family loves the copycat Olive Garden salad. It tastes so good with the ham soup.
You can also pair it with some Keto Spicy Green Beans with Caramelized Pecans. You might have to be careful with the serving sizes though – both dishes are higher in carbs.
Or, for something sweeter, I suggest making a strawberry cucumber salad instead. On the side, serve some keto garlic knots that you can dunk into the creamy soup!
For some veggies, add some garlic butter zucchini and squash. They will perfectly complement all the savory herbs and flavors in this soup.
