What Is Shepherd’s Pie
Also called cottage pie, shepherd’s pie is a savory dish that isn’t actually a pie at all. You can bake it in a pie plate or a casserole dish! Cooked ground or minced meat is topped with mashed potatoes and baked. There are a lot of different versions of shepherds pie out there. Some are made with ground lamb, and others are made with ground sausage.

Shepherds pie originated in England and is actually a very old recipe. Since then, it has been tweaked and changed.
Some people even make it with a gravy and some people don’t add vegetables at all. In fact, I have a keto shepherd’s pie recipe you should make after you make this soup!
Shepherds Pie Soup
I took the basic idea behind shepherd’s pie and turned into a low-carb soup. This recipe is just as hearty and filling, but I used turnips instead of potatoes and adding a creamy broth instead of a gravy.
If you enjoy this soup, you’ll probably also love keto shepherd’s pie with portobello mushrooms. It has some serious flavors!
The entire recipe is finished in less than half an hour! That’s a lot quicker than take-out and there are so many ways to change this recipe to match your tastes.
If you want it spicier, add some red pepper flakes. Or add a little sweetness to it by sprinkling some Swerve brown sugar substitute with a dash of cinnamon.
Low-Carb Potato Soup
I think I should call it “faux-tato” soup because I didn’t use any potatoes in this soup. Turnips are the best low-carb substitute for potatoes. And when you cook them with the ground beef and in the broth, they absorb all the flavors around it.
When cooked with the ground beef and in broth, they absorb all the flavors around it. Trust me, to get the best flavors from this soup, use fresh herbs!
Dried herbs can work too, but they won’t have the same powerful aromas.
There are 8 grams net carbs in each serving of this soup. If you want to minimize the amount of carbs, use less of the frozen peas and carrots mixture and cut the tomato paste down to 1 1/2 tablespoons. Those three things have the most carbs.
Turnip Soup
If you don’t think you like the flavor of turnips, give this soup a try! The turnips don’t taste like turnips.
By the time they cook with the onions, meat, and fresh herbs, they actually taste more like potatoes.
This is the perfect type of soup to use in your meal prep, too! Store leftover shepherds pie soup in an airtight container (like a mason jar with a lid). Keep it in the refrigerator for up to three days. Then, reheat it on the stove or in the microwave.
What To Eat With Soup
Since this soup has Italian herbs in it, I suggest serving it with your favorite type of Italian salad. For an easy soup and salad lunch, make a copycat Olive Garden salad. They taste fantastic together!
You can also pair it with some Keto Spicy Green Beans with Caramelized Pecans. You might have to be careful with the serving sizes though – both dishes are higher in carbs.
Or, for something sweeter, I suggest making a strawberry cucumber salad instead. On the side, serve some keto garlic knots. They always go well with any Italian recipe you make.
For some veggies, add some garlic butter zucchini and squash. They will perfectly complement all the savory herbs and flavors in this soup.
