You’ve heard of au gratin potatoes, but have you made au gratin asparagus? This cheesy baked asparagus recipe is tasty and keto-friendly.

Almost everything tastes better when you smother it in a savory cheese sauce. And sweet asparagus stalks are the same way.

Keto Baked Au Gratin Asparagus

This zesty recipe makes asparagus taste so good that even people who usually don’t like it will rave about it and ask for seconds! The sauce is rich and thick, and topping everything with bacon makes it taste like perfection on a plate. au gratin

This recipe makes six servings, so I suggest doubling it if you’re feeding a huge family. The really good news about this recipe is that each serving has only 5 grams of net carbs.

This means I can eat the same thing as my family without anyone knowing they’re eating a keto-friendly recipe. 

Keto Baked Asparagus 

This keto baked asparagus recipe is ready in less than 30 minutes. There are just a few steps to it, but it’s still one of the easiest recipes I’ve made in a long time.

Keto Baked Au Gratin Asparagus

If it sounds familiar, it’s because it’s a different version of another one of my popular asparagus recipes. 

I improved my popular Low-Carb Cheesy Asparagus recipe. But you should try both and see which one you like best!

This keto au gratin asparagus has heavy whipping cream for a richer sauce. I also used butter instead of olive oil because it goes better with the heavy cream and cheese.

The last change I made was to add some chopped onions. The chopped onions round out the flavors from the garlic. 

Best Cheese With Asparagus 

What is the best type of cheese to add on top of asparagus? You want to pick something that will melt easily and have a mild flavor so that the flavor of the asparagus can stand out too.

Keto Baked Au Gratin Asparagus

That’s why I chose to use mozzarella cheese. If you want to splurge a little bit, get a ball of really fresh mozzarella cheese!

Not only will it melt better since it doesn’t have anti-caking agents on it. but it has a really buttery flavor. You’ll love how it brings out the natural sweetness in the heavy whipping cream, too. 

What To Eat With Asparagus 

This is the perfect side dish to add to your baked ham sheet pan dinner or make a classic roast turkey. Then, all you have to do is add more side dishes and a few desserts to the table to make the dinner complete. 

Keto Baked Au Gratin Asparagus

How To Store Asparagus 

This asparagus au gratin tastes the best when it is hot and fresh out of the oven but it’s totally safe to eat the leftovers. For the best results, I suggest eating leftovers within three days.

Store leftover baked cheesy asparagus in an airtight container and keep it in the refrigerator. Then reheat it in the microwave.

Keto Baked Au Gratin Asparagus Ingredients

Ingredients

  • Asparagus 
  • Butter
  • Onion 
  • Heavy Whipping Cream 
  • Shredded Mozzarella Cheese 
  • Parmesan Cheese
  • Salt and Pepper
  • Bacon Pieces

Directions 

Sauteeing onion and butter

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Stir in the onions, and saute until they have softened.

Making the cheese sauce

Pour in the heavy whipping cream, and simmer until thickened.

Shredded Mozzarella Cheese

Mix in the parmesan cheese and 1 cup of the mozzarella cheese, and stir until the cheese has melted. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Adding cheese sauce on top of the asparagus

Layer the asparagus in a well greased 0x13 baking dish. Pour the cheese sauce over the asparagus, and top with the remaining cheese.

Bake for 12-14 minutes. Serve garnished with bacon pieces.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 1/2 pounds Asparagus with the woody ends removed
  • 2 tbsp Butter
  • 1/2 Onion chopped
  • 1 cup Heavy Whipping Cream
  • 1 1/2 cups Shredded Mozzarella Cheese
  • 1/3 cup Parmesan Cheese grated
  • Bacon Pieces for garnish

Instructions
 

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
