This is where sweet and umami meet. Keto Mongolian chicken has the perfect balance of sweet and heat for your tastebuds.
What Is Mongolian Chicken
This is a lighter version of my popular keto air fryer Mongolian beef recipe. Instead of beef, it uses chicken and since I made it in a skillet, I made a few other changes to the recipe, too.
This dish is also similar to my skillet Mongolian Beef recipe.
Mongolian chicken (or Mongolian beef) is a staple meal at almost any Asian restaurant you visit. It’s usually made with steak that has a crispy coating (from flour or cornstarch) and then tossed in a sweet sauce (that uses either brown sugar or honey) and it’s often served with green beans.
Keto Mongolian Chicken
This copycat version rivals anything you’d get at a Chinese restaurant. There are only 5 grams net carbs in each serving!
That’s because I skipped the breading and just seared the chicken instead. Honestly, you won’t miss the crispy breading.
The flavor is what really stands out! There’s a lot of heat from the ginger and red pepper flakes and they enhance the umami flavors from the soy sauce and Sesame oil.
Then, don’t forget to add your favorite sweetener. I used Swerve brown sugar substitute because I love the deeper caramel notes in it.
Chicken and Green Beans
Green beans are traditionally served with Mongolian chicken or beef. But you want to cut the carb count back, I suggest using a veggie with fewer carbs.
Zucchini, cauliflower, and broccoli are all fantastic choices.
And don’t forget about the red dried chiles! They might be optional, but they add some serious heat to the dish.
What To Eat With Chicken
Chinese recipes are traditionally served with either rice or pasta. So, serve this recipe with your favorite cauliflower rice recipe.
If you want to keep the sides light, then a bowl of keto egg drop soup is perfect. It might have more carbs, but Keto Shrimp Egg Roll in A Bowl tastes just like an egg roll, so it’s perfect with this recipe.
For a veggie, make bacon and green beans. The mild, savory flavors pair well with the bold Mongolian chicken.
And if you want to make Mongolian chicken with a Chinese-inspired meal, make some keto Chinese noodles to serve on the side. They have a lot of complementary ingredients.
How To Store Mongolian Chicken
This flavorful chicken and green beans dish is perfect to save in your meal prep throughout the week. Store your leftover Mongolian chicken skillet in an airtight container and keep it in the refrigerator for up to three days.
You can freeze it, too. Keep it in an airtight and freezer-safe food storage bag. Store it in your freezer for up to six months.
