These keto patty melts are what you get when you combine a grilled cheese sandwich with a burger – it’s better than takeout!
What Are Patty Melts
A traditional patty melt is a ground beef patty that is sandwiched between slices of cheese, caramelized onions, and toasted rye bread. It’s like a cross between a cheeseburger and a grilled cheese sandwich. Instead of a hamburger bun, the burger and cheese are in between two slices of grilled bread.
Patty melts are the definition of comfort food. Every bite is full of melty goodness.
The caramelized onions sweeten the savory burger and tangy cheese. It’s an incredibly delicious way to make burgers.
Keto Patty Melts
Even though they don’t make keto-friendly rye bread, you can make low-carb patty melts by using your favorite kind of low-carb bread. But what really sets these patty melts apart from other burger recipes is how you season the ground beef.
The burger patties are flavored with onion powder, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce. The two types of cheese also enhance the burger, too.
Adding both Swiss and cheddar cheese gives you a patty melt that is both tangy and creamy and oh-so-good. If you want to really change things up, grab some jalapeno cheese from the specialty cheese section and add that to the burger too.
Best Keto Sandwich Bread
If you want, you can make homemade keto bread with almond flour. It will toast up really well and you can make the slices thick so it grills on the stove better.
But you can also buy keto-friendly sandwich bread, too. The Diet Chef has a list of 15 different brands of low-carb bread and explains the differences between them really well. My favorite kind of keto-friendly bread is L’oven low-carb bread because I can buy it at Aldi’s and each slice is just 0 grams net carbs!
What To Eat With Burgers
Start out this meal with a bowl of Keto Cheesecake Factory Chopped Salad. It’s full of fresh ingredients that taste amazing with the cheesy burger. Or a bowl of Keto BLT Zucchini Noodles Salad is a wonderful way to add more veggies to the table.
For even more protein, a filling Keto Grinder Salad can really hit the spot. If you want to replace french fries as the perfect burger side dish, make some keto fried pickles with cheese or a bowl of keto potato salad with cauliflower.
Finally, enjoy it all with a glass of Keto Sweet Tea.
How To Store Burgers
I don’t recommend storing the patty melts after you make them. This is because the melted cheese and cooked burger will soften the toasted bread.
Then, if you try to reheat it, the bread will be too soft. It’s better to pre-cook the burger patties and then store them separately from the sandwiches.
Then, all you have to do is reheat the hamburger patties and add them to the toasted bread with the cheese and onions. The cooked hamburger patties will stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to three days.
